Pigment marks usually occur in unprotected areas that are regularily exposed to the sun: the forehead, cheeks, upper lip, shoulders, décolleté and hands. This is where the excess melanin that leads to dark discolorations of the skin is formed. In addition to UV radiation, taking hormones can also increase melanin production (hyperpigmentation) in the skin. Sunscreen should be applied regularly in order to prevent pigment marks from forming. However, many lightening products are available to reduce the appearance of pigment marks.

Pigment spots – When unsightly blemishes take over our skin

What exactly are pigment spots? We know them as little brownish marks on the skin, but often we have no idea what causes them or what we can do about them.
One of the causes of these changes in skin pigmentation is UV radiation. This boosts the production of melanin, the body’s natural pigment that protects the skin by shielding it from the sun’s rays. But in the event of a pigmentation disorder, specific cells known as melanocytes either produce too much melanin or produce it irregularly. This can lead to hyperpigmentation, i.e. pigment spots. If melanin production is insufficient or does not occur at all, this causes the well-known white patches. As we would all like to have a flawless complexion and pigmentation marks often cannot be concealed adequately with make-up, the right skincare is essential.

How to protect against pigment spots

Sun protection is important in order to prevent hyperpigmentation! An anti-aging cream that contains a sunscreen is a good start. Active lightening ingredients such as vitamin C, arbutin and various plant extracts also help. These contain anti-oxidants that protect the skin cells and some of them can also stop melanin production.
Our advice: Prevention – i.e. using the right skincare products – is the best protection in the battle against dark pigmentation marks on the skin. And with the right anti-pigmentation product we can do something to reduce them!
