More than 15 years ago, BABOR BEAUTY GROUP aimed to harvest a valuable raw material in the Eifel region: serviceberries. Among local fruits, serviceberries have the highest vitamin C content, making them an ideal source of active ingredients for BABOR’s expert skin care products. Because serviceberries are rare, the group wanted to protect the stock and harvest the extracts on a plantation.
Over the years, in collaboration with the Fraunhofer Institute, they succeeded in obtaining these valuable ingredients in the lab using plant stem cell technology. This advancement meant the trees and their fruits were no longer needed for raw materials. So, what happened to the service tree plantation? In 2020, BABOR BEAUTY GROUP transformed it into a bioreserve. Shortly after, the company made it the new home for eight bee colonies. Today, bees serve as a visible symbol of sustainable cosmetics production that protects our planet’s biodiversity.
The bioreserve is complemented by BABOR’s own forest. Every year, more trees are planted on around 100,000 square meters, aiming for a total of 30,000 trees. The bee colonies and the BABOR forest are key components of BABOR BEAUTY GROUP’s sustainability strategy.
